Dear sweet Skipper was nine
years old last March.
And years ago he had been taken as a pup to
puppy training classes.
That he and I attended up until
Hurricane Charley destroyed our county, our home as well as the building used for his classes.
It was a fun one, not
discipline, just puppies playing with puppies and going through an agility
course and learning little fun things, happy puppy things.
Skipper showed quite a bit of
potential on the agility track, he walked through fencing, climbed up ramps and slid down, jumped, tunneled through a tube all with
a happy go lucky air about him and no fear at all!
His intelligence was quite
impressive to me.
That was then and this is
now.
Fast forward nine years and
not doing more than loving, feeding him and caring for him as all doggy parents
do and him not doing too many tricks anymore, although, he loves us back
unconditionally too. And when I have been bed ridden he always takes his
sentinel lay down position on the bed right next to me.
He understands when I say go get
Daddy/Hubby and the word 'no', when barking more than necessary and stay and sit, you know
the usual, he used to dance with me, but since I no longer do he doesn’t
either.
And when he instinctively
hears the backyard birds make their fearful chirps he seems to know that a
predator is out there and jumps on the back door to chase the usual one, a hawk
away!
One trick we both, Hubby and
I have been trying to teach him recently is to bring us his bowls when they are
empty to be refilled, they are both made of tough material that is unbreakable
and fairly light enough for him to carry.
A couple of times I caught
him in the act of playing with the empty bowl and would say pick it up and
bring it to Daddy. And he would pick it up and not go direct to Hubby but bring
it on to the couch. I suppose he knows Hubby has a bad back and bending is not
that easy for him and so we say thank you and have felt that was a very nice
little trick for him to do that way when asked.
Well, two days ago his bowl
was empty again, by the way, he only eats dry dog food and unbeknownst to both
of us, Hubby and I, Skipper’s bowl was empty, until he picked it up, without
being told and just brought it right onto the couch! How do you like those apples,
hmm? He is nine now, an old dog by many standards, but has learned that trick we
just tried a few times before; he’s brilliant in our book!
We never talked down to any
of our kids of either variety, two footed or four…we always talk to them like
we would anybody else, maybe, just maybe that’s why some times things just work
or not? Who knows…?
Moving on…
Today I almost didn’t go to the
gym/rehab due to a really sore throat and a low grade fever, but I got ready
anyway and showered as always before, warms the muscles. Any-who, I sat for a
while thinking I feel horrid and I did. I was on my second throat lozenge and
my temp’s last reading was just short of 100 degrees. Relaxed a while and said oh well,
even posted my feelings, which I did delete later, since within a half an hour I was
fine again? How odd, but nice.
I was also thrilled with my
glucose fasting reading of just 79 this morning! I take a test about once or
twice a week since I was diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes although not put on
meds just told to watch my diet and the fact that I am exercising is a plus
too! My glucose on all other previous occasions had been over 100, which is not
good for fasting.
After the gym/rehab we again
had lunch at the Cultural Center and today I had black bean soup that was
scrumptious and a small salad but Hubby went for the meal of roast pork with
two sides, with both our own beverages, his water of the tap variety and mine,
club soda of the generic one, ha!
And so when it was time for
dinner we for some reason, in my case that is, were not that hungry and Hubby
suggested something we had not had for quite some time, peanut butter and jelly
sandwiches!
The peanut butter we had was
lower fat but not flavor and the crunchy variety, and the grape jelly was no
sugar added variety, but I jazzed mine up with banana too! A tall glass of skim
milk and I was in nostalgia heaven!
Hubby had coffee, how dare
he! LOL!
On that note of some notes of
high and the low kind, allow me to be the very first to wish all of you a very
happy good night and ask you to kindly count all your blessings and share those
overages with you know who and we will too!
And next time please be here
or be square, ya hear!
