Research for this word of interest to me has been a short drive to a few sites that specifically state that it comes from the Greek word ‘nekros’ meaning, death, and ‘onoma’ meaning, name, in reference to a person who has died using their name.
“For instance, in some cultures it is common for a newborn child to receive the name (a necronym) of a relative who has recently died, while in others to reuse such a name would be considered extremely inappropriate or even forbidden. While this varies from culture to culture, the use of necronyms is quite common.” This is from thanks to Wikipedia, which I do know has taken a few hits recently for accuracy, but I do believe this is correct and as concise an explanation that I had come across.
If any of you desire more info from the above site, just copy and paste this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necronym
Sadly I thought it was just a way to honor the dearly departed in your particular family, but little did I realize it was also utilized during the Cold War for nefarious reasons, actually in using a decent person who had died name for not nice reasons, for spying and creating a new alias for that spy to use.
Apparently, unbeknownst to me since I did grow up and live through a significant amount of time during the ‘Cold War’, 1945-1991, this is a particular practice that I seemed to have missed. Below is the info access for more on the Cold War, this site is great for the youngins who may not have been here or even some of us oldies who may have forgotten, but not likely! I hear you!

Now that I have had some time to calm down from my in-law’s comment about me being a socialist, I finally found a comeback that I might have made him laugh and not get so angry with my way of thinking so differently from him. I should have said no I am not a socialist, I AM AN IDEALIST! So there, and stick out my adult tongue at him, that would have showed him! But it would have lost something when it is only done in an email not in person…And although it is all just in retrospect since we are no longer on speaking terms as so many have decided to be in that frame of mind with me. I make it so easy to be crossed off their lists for this or that with my un-witty counter to their attitudes or comments!
It amazes me to this day why there are even women who put down other women who speak their mind or in their own narrow ways of thinking think some of us speak way too much! Where is the sisterhood I hear so much about? Perhaps that is why as a child I always got along better with my male counterparts, sorry friends, but that is true! I think it is instilled in some people, sadly it still appears in women, to be lesser than what they in reality have the ability to be, their own cheering squad! Being shy and or quiet people who feel that their male or female counterparts are their spokes person truly makes me cringe! People please, men and women alike should allow each of us to be as strong as we can be in ideas as well as opinions and respect that strength in each other! But never expect others to conform to your way of thinking, unless it is totally their choice.
The Necronym thing again I felt was an interesting topic to me since I am named for my maternal grandmother, who was killed in an automobile accident six months before I was born. In fact both of my grandmothers were in heaven or wherever good loved people go, before I was born and so I never had the pleasure to know either one of them, and I so wish I had had that opportunity.
My paternal grandmother died in the late 1940’s when medicos were not that knowledgeable about diabetes and her legs went gangrene and she refused amputation, sadly I would have loved her with or without her legs, but I wasn’t born yet to tell her that!
Sorry about the maudlin end to tonight’s post, but when you start with names being used of your dead relatives it was bound to happen, LOL! Sorry again!
That did strike me as very funny!
But death can do that sometimes…huh?
Oh well, let’s get back on track and allow me to be the first to wish you all a very happy good night and to remind you all to count those blessings and share those overages and we will too!
And next time please be here or be square, ya hear?
PS Another interesting bit of trivia for this as a blog fact, my entitled topic of, “Snakes’ also created quite a stir stat numbers wise, amazing what people like, huh?
Speaking My Mind is about: Tobi, who is a middle aged, no, oh all right a slightly over the hill woman with all the imperfections that go with that, and this concerns her daily life's perceptions and experiences.
