Who remembers when Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, our
sixteenth president’s was celebrated on its actual date the 12th of
February? Or and that we also separately celebrated George Washington’s, our first
president’s on his and my Mom’s and my paternal grandfather’s on February 22nd?
I know that you all did not
separately celebrate my grandfather’s or my Mom’s birthdays, but good ole GW’s; I bet you
did if you were alive then when we used to do that.
Interesting little note here,
my Dad’s Dad was of course born in the 1880’s in Eastern Europe and in those
days they did not keep such good records of births or deaths and so he wasn’t
sure of his actual birth-date so he decided to share my Mom’s, since he said
that he thought that he was born in February too, how sweet, but my Mom was
born though in 1911. (Oddly enough grandpa's first name was Abraham!)
On this holiday as a child we
would be taught all about these two significant presidents, but what I still do
not understand is why only these two are celebrated not all of the ones we have
had and have since.
It is true to date we have had our share of interesting characters voted into the highest position of our land, but why not accept their negatives with their positives. Even a couple of them that were impeached turned out to be remembered for all the good that they actually did do…I’m just saying if we celebrated them all we must accept them warts and all, and in Lincoln’s case that would be a fact… well, bud dump bum... I’m just saying again…ha!
Moving on…
Tonight I leave you with many thoughts of this day.
Oh no?
How many truly understand why we do this?
Not me.
You?
Day off for schools, banks and the post office I suspect and another great sale day for retailers.
Ah America, got to love her! And YES she is a HER! That I do not know for sure either, but always willing to learn, guess like a ship?
On that note of another reality check with all our very patriotic holidays scrutinized, and again condensing the two presidents birthdays and making sure that it always made a three day holiday weekend is kinda neat, but not tried and true to the actual although works well for the many…but still a day here or a day there would be rather scattered and untidy, now I get it, it is for the love of neatness and that truly is neat…somewhere, some how, sometime, huh?
Allow me to tidy this all up with my own contrite wisdom and for me to be the very first to wish all of you a very happy good night and ask you all to count those blessings and share all those overages with you know who and we will too!
And next time please be here or be square, ya hear!
