Mystery dog illness and more...!

The mysterious respiratory illness that may have sickened scores of dogs across the country could be caused by a new type of bacterial infection that may be very good at evading the canine immune system, researchers say. Some dogs have died from the illness, which starts with causes a cough that can last for weeks, runny eyes, and sneezing.

In a development that might help shed light on the illness, which has affected a variety of dog breeds, researchers at the University of New Hampshire’s Veterinary Diagnosis Laboratory and the Hubbard Center for Genome Studies told NBC News they have identified a pathogen that might be what’s making pets sick.

Through genetic sequencing of samples from an initial group of 30 dogs from New Hampshire who were infected last year and then an additional 40 from Rhode Island and Massachusetts who got sick this year, the researchers say they have discovered a previously unknown germ.

The pathogen is “a funky bacterium,”  said Dr. David Needle, pathology section chief at the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture at the University of New Hampshire. “It’s smaller than a normal bacterium in its size and in the size of its genome. Long story short, it’s a weird bacterium that can be tough to find and sequence.”

Yes, we have our two littles, Bella and Chance, that's what we call them, " The Littles"(See bios below) scheduled every two months for grooming. For now, we will probably be postponing for at least a month until we find out more, about safety precautions, etc... Plus Hubby will be done by then with his radiation treatments.

Only out of love and concern, we will be waiting for that outcome for our fur babies near and far on how to proceed!

Believe me, this is not the first time I heard of it but it is now in my state so I rather err on the side of caution than anything else.

Moving on...

I have told all of you that my eyes are the cause of so many hotkey blogs, and that is true.

And the eye problem has not changed...

All I am doing is writing when my eyes are not misbehaving.

Sometimes it goes smoothly, and sometimes I will need to stop.

This blog was born out of a simple concept..."Speaking My Mind is about Tobi, who is a middle-aged, no, oh all right a slightly over-the-hill woman with all the imperfections that go with that, and this concerns her daily life's perceptions and experiences."

And, many days, lately, I have gotten away from all that!

First of all, I should make note of the inaccuracies of the synopsis...after writing this blog now going on sixteen years... I am well over the hill, not at all slightly!

I call them as I see them! HA! But I did get those imperfections correct, dropped the ball on daily life's perceptions and experiences...!!! When you stop living life to the fullest that happens... forgive.

Age and illness take their toll.

I hear you... NO EXCUSES!!!!

BUT, BUT, BUT...!!!

Anywho, life must go on till the end, and so must we...

Here's a thought Hubby mentioned when he stops his radiation at the end of this week... he would like to find a hobby for us both to take up, but he did mention NOT ARTS AND CRAFTS... nor Pickleball, any suggestions? He will be on his forever cancer pills then so he is good to go. You all know most of our limitations, and suggestions will be given, the once over.

Let me introduce you to the crew...

Lastly, moving on to who they are, our crew...

3 months and 4 years old, now 6!
Aussie, say good day!

I am Aussie, not from Australia, but American-made.
I will comply because it is fun and say good day!

I am called Aussie because my mom asked a sixteen-year-old girl looking at me in the crate I was in at the adoption site that day what she thought I should be named. Mom asked her age, but not her name... ha! And without hesitation, the teenager had said Aussie! By the way, she was just looking, so my mom did not steal me from her.
We never found out the girl's name; mom liked Aussie too. Since then, we have discovered that it is a ubiquitous name, but it is still just right for me! My parents think that I am uncommon, even say unique! I do like that.
I am an Australian Shepherd, a red Merl. And here is an interesting factoid about me: I was supposed to be a miniature Australian Shepherd, but as you might know, I AM NOT! I am a standard Australian Shepherd! Although I am now six years old, I am the baby, though I am the largest of the fur babies, and due to my breed and being standard, I am just right, ha!
I was three months old when Mommy and Daddy adopted me. I had been taken- out of a hoarder's home in the Carolinas with my litter.
Above is my PIC, taken on the birthday I share with my dad, but dad is much older than me!!! I was the first to be adopted, on February 16, 2018, on Dad's brother's birthday.
No tail/tale publishing, circa 2018.
Get it? I was born without a tail, preferable for all Australian Shepherds; only one out of five are born that way!

Hello, I am Bella, in the picture above, a Maltese Yorkie, a Morkie. I might be eight years old. We are all rescues, so no one knows our ages for sure. I am the middle child, so I am what you would expect, with all those idiosyncrasies accompanying that! Being the only girl has its rewards as well as its difficulties.
I was turned in by my previous family, stating that I was misbehaving with their elderly dog it had been said that I was driving him crazy! I was the second to be adopted on 8/18/18 on clear out the shelters day!
My record called me Belle, so for no known reason, Mom decided I was more of a Bella; beautiful either way!

Hey, wait! Please don't forget me! I am Chance, pictured above, a Bichon Frise! I am nine years old, so they think, and the eldest, and I like getting up early with mom and Aussie. Bella sleeps late with Dad, till after seven most days, even later sometimes!

I enjoy a good tug-a-war on the ropes Dad had twisted for Aussie and me, and sometimes even Bella plays, too! I was the last to be adopted on January 23, 2020.

I had been wandering the neighborhood for days, and then I saw Aussie and Bella in their living room window, so I hung out there...

The animal control lady had been called and came out to see if I had a chip I.D. with her machine, and Dad told her that he wanted to name me Chance. His reason is that if no one claimed me, "I want to give him a second chance!" So that is how I got the name Chance!

The Animal Welfare League checked me out and kept me for sixteen days until I was allowed to be adopted. Good evening.

Easy as Aussie, Bella, and Chance, now you got it! In order of adoption!
