Our dear sweet orange long-haired Tabby cat, Casey, with amber eyes has a severe hole in his tongue! He never ever complained, and until we saw blood on the bed where he was lying we just thought he was tired and old. But the other problem was his food wasn’t disappearing but he was drinking, and when I tried to look into his mouth it was shut tighter than a tin can! I called the vet first thing this morning since I had noticed also that he had a hard lump under his skin on his left side of his neck, and thought maybe he broke a tooth. One cat we had years ago had done that.
She told me to wake hubby and bring him in right away, Casey that is, so she could sedate him to get to the bottom of the problem.
It appears to be somewhat of a mystery still, since he is a house cat and has never been one to chomp on things like Skipper, our Bichon Frise who does eat just about everything he sees.
The hole is massive and goes all the way through. I feel like crying just thinking about it, it was horrifying seeing it when doc managed to pry his mouth open during her exam of him! She kept him for several hours to x-ray, blood work, take a biopsy, and medicate him since no real surgery is possible due to the location of the hole and it is too big and in his tongue, where she oddly enough found leaves imbedded in the wound possibly responsible for the infection. But steroids were given at the surgery as well as an IV of fluids, and soft foods were started as well as our job at home to continue with his pain medication morning and night and his penicillin too. He had lost four pounds; a lot for an eleven pound cat. Soft food will be given daily a can’s worth each day. Infection is the lesser of the two evils we are hoping for, since the other is horrendous….cancer! Hopefully not; a good sign we all agreed on was that he ate the food they were trying to give to him by syringe, he licked it right out of the bowl!
Casey is twelve now, nearly thirteen this coming January and has always been a house cat a gift from our younger son with his dog when he went into the Navy way back in 1999. His dog, a collie/Shepard mix, Andrew, named for the hurricane of the same name, since that is where he was brought home from. He had passed away years ago, 2001, from liver cancer; very quick and very sad at that time.
The biopsy report will be back by Friday, the day of reckoning one way or another, but by then he may feel so much better that we wouldn’t even know this ever happened, we hope.
On that concerned note we wish you all a good night and to all take care, and be safe, and count your blessings and I will think positive happy thoughts for Casey’s sake, OK?
