Being Green

How many people do you know are really on their way to conserving gas and electricity, and are recycling regularly or using non disposable products?

Personally, I know very few, but we are trying in our own small ways.
For us we are turning off appliances not being used, and some we even unplug, to prevent that ghost robber.

Florescent bulbs are used in a few lamps, and three of our five lighted fans, slowly we are moving out of the habit of using the candescent ones. The new ones, florescents are so expensive, but last a lot longer. Now can anyone tell me why the more efficient ones always seem to be more costly?

At the grocery we have the flier in hand for sale items, and scour the shelves for advertised specials, coupons are unfortunately often forgotten.
One shopping visit I was reminding my husband of our frugal decision to only sticking to a menu of sale items, I guess I was a little louder than usual, and an elderly couple was behind us, and what was said next by the wife made me giggle, "Now Honey remember we are sticking to only sale items for this weeks groceries." And she meant it. They followed us closely in the store and that was hysterical, which made the mundane chore fun.

Even though we have not gotten canvas reusable totes for groceries we do put the plastic bags in the recycling bin at the grocery on our return trip. Someday we will get the canvas ones.

We recycle at the curb once a week with our glass, cans, and plastics.
Newspaper is not a problem since we get our news online.
Magazines get donated to health care facilities, same with clothing or older appliances or any unused items we give them to Goodwill, or the Salvation Army, they recycle too.

Being retired we do not need to drive unnecessarily, so we make an effort to plan our routes, using much less gas. Literally gassing up only once a month, using gasbuddy.com, so we don't waste any looking for the best deal. We have not purchased a hybrid, because we own our 2001 car outright (bought it new), which has less than 32k miles on it.

We pay all our bills online, and receive our income as direct deposit both doing away with paper used previously for those things. Junk mail has diminished heartily, everyone is hurting.
Whew I guess we are doing a little to help with the world slowly and for sure we all are more than likely doing our part.

My soap box is formally closed for the evening, good night!
