Well, my Dad would have gone further and the gist of what he would have said is that hate IS a four-letter word and so...I was left to figure out the rest, ya know. If I recall correctly it was one of those meaning you were mean if you used it at all, dare I say hateful?

But Dad did not use those words specifically, this was in the mid-1960s my teen years. Where and when my mouth seemed to have a mind of its own... not unlike these years...hmm? That's why when the Honorable Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi spoke out about hating even our difficult to love, Pres. DJ and was asked if she hated him she retaliated with succinct language that her Catholic upbringing taught her to pray for people not hate them. (Paraphrased.) I cringed with her due to my Jewish Father's feelings about such language. Interesting, hmm? The more we think we are different the more we realize we are more alike.
My not so Catholic anymore husband still asks me not to say it out loud when I express OMG! but the actual words... see I am programmed not to say Oh MY G-d!!!!!! LOL, G-d spelled this way is due to my Jewish upbringing. I am Jewish whenever anyone says anything disparaging about my family religion, but Hubby and I both believe we are more agnostic these days. Although in the old days he would say he was half Jewish his better half... And these days even using the word "believe" sounds counter-agnostic, true? So please DO NOT SAVE US! We could turn back any minute...or NOT!? We do have a Buddha for peace and tranquility. Sometimes it works.
Shut up wasn't a four-letter word but to my, Dad he felt it was just horrid and as bad as any nasty language! And in those days it was often called being fresh, should have said spoiled like also a produce term, and like in brat, get it?
I had been accused of that, spoiled brat thingy, and I was told that marriage made me a mensch, and where are all those adorable Mensches on those Benches? Haven't seen many elves on the shelves either. Calling all seasonal stuffed toy cuties!
