Charleston, doing the Charleston!

All the lovely historic places that we visited had one issue that many with handicap needs have to try to circumvent to enjoy the locales is access. Historic buildings do not have to abide to the ADA, Americans for Disabilities Act or so they say, which has been known to cause havoc with my desire to entree these learned areas of much desire. I studied history of art in college and even when our sons were small and we traveled the east coast New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Washington D.C. and all points south from our point of origin in New Jersey in those days and many trips to our now home, Florida, museums were always a rainy day indoor entertainment place for all of us. But these days steps and not ramps are the only way to get into too many places even souvenir shops. Below when I wanted to get my Charleston South Carolina spoon I was directed to the only place that I was told carried them a Five and Dime. Roger, the manager is the only person in the picture below and he helped me with my wheels to access his place of business, by first carrying my walker up the steps and then allowing me to lean on him, a true Southern Gentleman; Hubby was riding around in our car/van with Gus since parking was also quite challenging. The other young man not photographed but helpful was named John in front of one of the hotels that allowed Hubby to help me in and out of our vehicle the only way to manage it all! At the Charleston River park we were able to park and enjoy the Gazebo and statues as well as the majestic homes surrounding the park that was quite lovely.
