We moved to Florida way back on August 19th of 1986, and even then there were inconsistencies in the state’s weather statements.
When you drove into the state of Florida the sign that welcomed you said specifically, “Welcome to Florida the Sunshine State!”
Oddly enough it was raining cats and dogs as we approached the sign, which also at the time, dare I say, sadly, also had the state name misspelled...
Oh well, fear over came me since we had two students in our vehicles, our sons, who were ten and fourteen at the time.
Rumor was that the state had one of the highest high school drop out rates and we had two bright sons who I was concerned might be turned into, ‘summer all the time kids’.
You know the type … summer is the lazy hazy days to do nothing or things not pertinent learning necessarily…Having only three months up north was contendable with but nearly nine months or more of that warm stuff had a tendency to make your children dream of water recreation sports, and the like… not thinking about reading books or homework or such…
Happily all my worries were for nothing considering in spite of all those silly worries our sons both graduated from high school and college too!
Tonight and for the last few nights brings back memories of our first few years here.
With our sons logic of we live in Florida and so that means wearing shorts to school all year round!
They even felt that when the weather got colder like it is today with highs in just the low sixties the fact that we lived here in the Sunshine State warranted summer like clothing year round!
Some wars with children are not worth trying to win, and fortunately they never got real sick from that conclusion, and the battle over proper clothing attire was one I never fought too hard it was not worth it.
Thankfully they are both healthy men today.
But to be honest in all the years we have been living here it seems that the last two of them have been getting colder for longer periods of time, and this year’s is even earlier than last year’s cold spell! I can remember when it was perhaps a day or two of the cold no longer than a week, but last winter it was as if we were back in New Jersey minus the snow, because it lasted for nearly two months! I sure hope that we are not going to have a rerun of that!
I don’t own enough cold weather clothes!
Right now the weather meter on the bottom right of my tool bar says it is already down to fifty! And if we weren’t living on the water we tonight would be expecting below freezing temperatures. Many have to protect their crops or their home gardens but we living on the water seem to be assured that the freeze will not occur here.
Farmers have to run the water which insulates the young crops others cover them with sheets of light weight fabrics. It is quite a project for them, and many crops were lost last year due to the freeze, hopefully that will not reoccur.
As most of the world I am sure realizes that having updated weather information is vital to all farmers and home gardeners and just the population at large for all sorts of weather related newsworthy stories, since it seems to change at a moment's notice.
Is it me or my age or just the fact that I am retired perhaps but I find the weather fascinating and never ever the same from day to day, rather interesting don’t you think?
We are fortunate to have access to the information for tracking the weather on all forms of technology from ordinary TV to computers to phones to whatever way you may want to find out.
As much as I like a bit cooler weather too cold is not what I really signed on to moving here to the Sunshine State all those years ago!
LOL! Who would have thunk it that these temperatures would become common in this state at this time of the year?
I do believe in Global Warming and the ozone layer stuff and all that, but I guess I am not clear on what exactly causes this?
These cold snaps getting longer than just snapping…getting, mega cold periods!
Thank heavens for all those meteorologists they seem to know how to keep us apprised of the most significant info and so we stay tuned, as the old saying goes!
On that note of incredulous amazing weather for us southerners I would like to ask you all to please count all those blessings and share those overages and we will too!
And next time please be here or be square, OK?
PS Some take this weather for a significant symbol as festive of what they gave up when they moved south for celebrating the holidays! Whatever it is we will survive it and enjoy it because we do know that it won’t last that long; nothing ever does here… the localism that had been told to me when we arrived “If you don’t like the weather now, wait a bit and it will definitely change!” LOL!
Speaking My Mind is about: Tobi, who is a middle aged, no, oh all right a slightly over the hill woman with all the imperfections that go with that, and this concerns her daily life's perceptions and experiences.
